CONVERGENCE MUSIC: THE NEW SOUND OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM

New CD Blends Ancient Worship with New Contemporary Sound

San Juan Capistrano, CA – Southern California based Three Streams Music has just released its latest CD Convergence 2001, a musical blend of worship songs, devotional prayers and liturgical works set to contemporary musical compositions. This landmark CD “converges” words and themes of the ancient liturgical tradition often found in catholic services with more contemporary, gospel and classical sounds of charismatic and evangelical churches.

“We believe Convergence 2001 is reflective of a new move of the Holy Spirit at work in the church today that brings together unique styles of worship that enriches the spiritual life and inspires all who listen and join in,” says Three Streams President David Anderson.

Convergence 2001 features 14 songs from various artists from the gospel exuberance of Ron E. Mudd and the upbeat liturgical settings of Kimberly Scoggin, to the contemplative melodies of Randy Allan (Randall Terry), the inspirational vocals of Janelle Ross and congregational worship as well. The music comes from a number of churches and artists of the International Communion of the Charismatic Episcopal Church and captures the unique sound of the denomination.

The varied songs of this CD will appeal to Christian audiences of all walks of life because of its unique diversity. Convergence music forms a rich tapestry of musical expressions: joyful, contemplative, worshipful, uplifting inspirations.

"We believe God is removing barriers that separated different expressions of worship and is re-braiding these three strands into one unified cord," says Anderson. "There is such a longing in the church to put aside those things that have divided us. We believe music is that unifying element.”

Three Streams Music is the first of its kind publishing house that blends a unique worship sound that reflects the Sacramental, Evangelical and Charismatic streams of the Christian life.

Vox Domini - The Voice Of the Lord
Kimberly Scoggins/St. Michael's Choir - Three Streams Music

I should begin by declaring my bias up front: I am a baby boomer whose musical taste buds were quenched by the simple driving guitars of Bob Seger and tight harmonies of the Eagles. I came to Christ at 19 years of age in a "classical" Pentecostal setting and have remained there to this day. I tell you this in an effort to somehow communicate to you my apprehension when I first read the liner notes to Vox Domini - The Voice of The Lord. How was I, coming from a paradigm where "liturgical worship" is often considered to be an oxymoron, qualified to review a product of "The Charismatic Episcopal Church?" With some trepidation I dropped the CD into place and sat down for an initial once through.

Vox Domini is an eclectic and creative mix of liturgical, charismatic, and Evangelical expressions of worship (hence the "Three Streams." Get it?). It's a new sound they are calling "convergence music," the blending of the old and the new as inspired by Matthew 13:52. Sounds like an interesting premise, but what of the actual results?

I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. With notable exceptions (the "Kenolyesque" bass driven "We Praise You for Your Glory" comes to mind), the tone is generally contemplative and meditative but not in a monotonous, lifeless way. For example, "Holy Is The Lord, God" is a simple, flowing, piano-based melody that could lift any congregation into gentle waves of worship: "Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God / Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God / God of power and might." A personal favorite was "Prayer for Surrender." Based upon a reading the artist discovered in an old prayer book, this song is moving in both its content and presentation: "Father, I abandon myself into Your hands / Do with me what You will / Do with me what You will / Whatever You do, I thank You / I'm ready for all, I accept all / Let only Your will be done in me / And in all Your creatures." The production in basic and the melody is simple. This could be sung with very little instrumentation to great effect.

Are you a more liturgically based church? This CD repaves some ancient paths. Are you looking for new songs to express the heart in those gentle moments of heightened awareness of God's majesty? Apart from a couple of theological gnats ("St. Michael's Prayer" is a petition to the Archangel Michael for protection), there are some quality options here. Are you thinking of starting a Gen X service? Their interest in all things liturgical is becoming increasingly evident. Vox Domini could be a useful resource for blending "the new treasures as well as the old."

Converging Catholic and Charismatic

New Music Company Unleashes Debut CD in
A Call of the Holy Spirit to Help Unify the Church

San Juan Capistrano, CA - Southern California based Three Streams Music has just released its debut CD Vox Domini (Latin for "The Voice of the Lord"), a musical blend of Psalms, Devotional Prayers, Traditional Hymns, and Liturgical Passages set to contemporary musical compositions. This landmark CD "converges" words and themes of the ancient liturgical tradition often found in catholic services with more contemporary, gospel and classical sounds of charismatic or evangelical churches.

"We believe there is a profound move of the Holy Spirit at work in the church today," says Three Streams co-founder and Executive Producer Kim Scoggin. "There is such a longing in the church to put aside those things that have divided us and look to the majority that unites us. Music is that unifying element in the church."

The convergence musical sound blends ancient words of the church with the contemporary and Spirit-filled music of today. Three Streams Music was established in order to merge the evangelical, the liturgical and the charismatic into a sound that would be appreciated by all members of the church.

Vox Domini features the musical compositions of Mrs. Scoggin along with the vocal contributions of various gospel and classical artists. From the soaring, inspirational vocals of Dena Rickert in "Lord Have Mercy," the contagious gospel exuberance of Ron E. Mudd and Linda Quinn in "We Praise You for Your Glory" to the contemplative Celtic sound of Elizabeth Priest in "Prayer for Surrender," Vox Domini takes music of the ancient church to the next millennium with glory and majesty... and a little bit of soul!

"Unfortunately many evangelicals don't understand the liturgy and music of the Catholic Church and most Catholics don't understand the free-flowing worship found in many evangelical and charismatic services," Mrs. Scoggin continues. "This CD blends the two in a powerful and inspirational musical experience."

Hosanna's Integrity series, Maranatha Music as well as other well-known publishing houses have been producing similar "convergence" music in their latest praise and worship offerings. Three Streams is the first of its kind that will emphasize this unique worship sound.
